Bronchial cancer is one of the most frequent and most fatal cancers in Europe and its treatment rarely cures more than 10 % of the patients. In 1978, with the idea of fighting against what is a real health plague, J. Klastersky created within the scope of the Jules Bordet Institute of Brussels, a cooperative group of oncologists and chest physicians from various Belgian
institutions. This local Belgian group, working initially within the EORTC, expanded progressively and was joined in 1985 by French investigators, giving it an European outlet through institutions from France and afterwards from Luxembourg, Greece, Italy, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

Pr. Jean-Paul Sculier, current President, runs the data center at the Jules Bordet Institute, logistic support of the cooperative group. Given the increasing importance of the Group and its works, the Group obtained legal autonomy founding the European Lung Cancer Working Party (ELCWP) in 1988. New research cooperative patterns were taken, in particular, fight against tobacco smoking, epidemiological studies on lung cancer, meta-analyses and systematic reviews, as well as prognostic factor studies.

The therapeutic trial programme focuses on local as well as metastatic forms of the various bronchial cancer histological types.

The ELCWP is open since Novembre 2005 to the participation of non-membres to some trials according to ad hoc rules.
